Tigers serve Baker Wildcats

The women’s tennis team has finally found success in their past few matches. The team won their duals against Hesston and Bethel and most recently defeated Baker University. Fresh off their first victory of the season, the Tigers travelled to Hesston to take on Bethel College and Hesston College.

The Tigers played their first dual against Hesston. Doubles play was the strong point for the Tigers as they went undefeated in that area. Sophomores Adrijana Pavlovic and Jamie Blackim made quick work of their competition defeating Hesston’s Jennifer Lecklider and Harvka Sano 8-0.

Likewise, sophomore, teammates Brittney Laner and Jessica Montemayor defeated Heidi Zehr and Steph Swartzendruber of Hesston 8-1. Sophomores Wrylie Finkle and Shannon Franz won their match by forfeit.

The team continued their dominance in singles play with each player winning their match. The Tigers won 60 of the 61 games played. Pavlovic dispatched her opponent with 6-0, and 6-1 wins. Montemayor, Finkle, Franz, and Brittany Berryman, freshman, all won their matches handily 6-0, 6-0. Laner won her match by default.

Cowley transitioned their success against Hesston into their dual with Bethel. Pavlovic and Blackim again quickly dismantled their opponents 8-0 while the duos of Laner and Montemayor and Finkle and Franz defeated their opponents 8-2. Singles play was a similar story with each player winning their matches.

No. 1 singles player Pavlovic defeated Miranda Weaver 6-2, 6-0. Blackim won her match with 6-3 and 6-1 wins while Montemayor defeated Bethel’s Allison Kaster. Natalia Medina, sophomore, won her first and only match of the day 6-4, 6-3. Finkle and Franz also won their matches 6-0, 6-1 and 6-0,6-0.

Coming off their overwhelming performance at Hesston the Tigers traveled to Baldwin City to pick up their third straight win. The Tigers again were unmatched and defeated Baker University 9-0. The team did not drop a single set.

In doubles play Blackim and Pavlovic curbed their opponents 8-3 as did fellow teammates Montemayor and Laner. Finkle and Franz had an even more impressive match defeating their opponents 8-0.

Singles play was a continued constant as Baker failed to win more than two games in one set. Pavlovic easily routed Taylor Bonar 6-0, 6-0. Blackim and Finkle would follow in her footsteps with their own shut outs. Montemayor defeated Tresa Carter 6-0, 6-2, while Medina defeated Lauren Thames 6-2, 6-1. Franz also won her matches 6-1, 6-1.

The ladies will be back in action today at Wichita State University.
