Tigers serve Baker Wildcats

The women’s tennis team has finally found success in their past few matches. The team won their duals against Hesston and Bethel and most recently defeated Baker University. Fresh off their first victory of the season, the Tigers travelled to Hesston to take on Bethel College and Hesston College. 

The Tigers played their first dual against Hesston. Doubles play was the strong point for the Tigers as they went undefeated in that area. Sophomores Adrijana Pavlovic and Jamie Blackim made quick work of their competition defeating Hesston’s Jennifer Lecklider and Harvka Sano 8-0.

Tigers fall to Seward Saints: Desalme finishes first season 21-11

The men’s basketball team saw their season end last Saturday. The Tigers fell to Seward County 79-75 in the final minutes of the game during the second round of the Region VI Tournament held at Charles Koch Arena at Wichita State University.

The game started off fast for the Tigers with Freshmen Tyrus McGee and Canon Fields combining for half of the Tiger’s 40 first half points. Most of McGee’s points were coming from behind the arc as he finished the first half 3-5 from three-point-range. 

Freshman Jordan Lankster also had seven points on 3-4 shooting in the first half.  The swift offensive attack led to the games largest lead with Cowley up 31-21. Heading into halftime the Saints had shortened the Tigers lead to six points 40-34.

Track places third and eleventh: Ray and Gillmore national champions

The Cowley track teams had some previously qualified athletes compete in the NJCAA Indoor Championships in Charleston, Ill., on Friday, March 5, and Saturday, March 6. The men’s team finished 11 while the women’s team placed third. 

Individually for the men, sophomores Jory Custer and Mac Griffith were the highest finishers. Both athletes placed fourth in their events, Custer in the 800-meter run and Griffith in the Heptathlon. Both athletes also received All American honors for their performances. 

Freshmen Charles James, Josh Gracia, and Rick Valcin also performed well at nationals all finishing sixth in their events. Gracia finished sixth in the 3000-meter and 5000-meter runs. He received Coaches All American honors in both events.  James finished sixth in the shot put while Valcin placed in the pole vault. James also received All American honors.

Seward County Saints end Tigers’ season

The No. 13-ranked Seward County Lady Saints ended Cowley’s season with a 86-64 victory in the semifinals of the Region VI Tournament played Sunday at WSU’s Charles Koch Arena.

The win improved Seward’s record to 31-2 overall, and advanced them to the championship game vs. Labette. Cowley ends the season with a record of 21-12.

Cowley was able to lead 9-2 following a three-pointer by Anna Sonka with four minutes gone by in the first half, but Seward answered with nine straight points to lead 11-9.

Cowley went back on top 19-18, the  Lady Saints again responded with a 12-0 run to lead 30-19. The Lady Tigers went scoreless for nearly five  minutes during the run.

Men’s tennis playing hardball

The men’s tennis team has recently caught fire after a slow opening match. The Tigers have defeated their past three opponents by a combined score of 27-0. First the team defeated Bethel and Hesston 9-0 and then slammed Baker University with a 9-0 win.

In their second match of the season the Tigers competed against both Bethel and Hesston at Hesston. The competition favored Cowley all day. The Tigers played Hesston first. In doubles play sophomore Lloyd Bruce Burgess and Joan Valls, freshman, and Roger White, sophomore and Alex Dickson, freshman, quickly dispatched their opponents in an 8-0 victory. The duo of sophomores Renato Mendes and Felipe Pimenta were tested more than their fellow teammates but managed an 8-6 win over Ryan Wengerd and Taylor Nobel.
