Coming off of a 30-2 record last year and an undefeated conference season, the women’s basketball team has faced some difficulties this season. The Lady Tigers had a less impressive 11-7 record overall and were 2-4 in the Jayhawk Conference East Division heading into Wednesday night’s Homecoming game with Neosho.

“The lack of self discipline, aggression, urgency and consistency are the weaknesses of the team,” sophomore Ashley Burnett said.

On Saturday, Jan. 21, the Lady Tigers started out slowly against the Labette Lady Cardinals, trailing 24-3 in the beginning and never catching up in the 65-47 loss.

“We need to start strong, compete and defend,” Burnett said. “Our offense could always be better.”

Before the Labette game, the Lady Tigers broke a three-game losing streak and finally got an easy home win over Kansas City Community College 65-37 on Jan. 18. Sophomore Megan Shoenfeld had a stellar performance, leading all scorers with 22 points to go with 10 rebounds, six assists and four steals.

On Jan. 14, despite a late rally, the Lady Tigers lost to visiting Johnson County. After trailing by 63-49 with 1:24 remaining in the game, the Lady Tigers went on a 14-3 run to close the gap at 66-63 with 32 seconds left. The Lady Cavaliers were able to hold on for the win, as Cowley turned the ball over with just 20.4 seconds remaining.

In their first game back from winter break, on Saturday, Jan. 7, the Lady Tigers experienced an unusual loss to Independence Community College. This 58-49 loss shattered a 21-game winning streak in the Jayhawk East. Then a 16-game winning streak over Allen County came to an end as the Lady Tigers fell 48-47 on Jan. 11 at Allen.

“I feel that the leadership isn’t as strong as it should be,” Burnett said. “I feel that there are players that could be more vocal.”

The team travels to Fort Scott on Saturday, then Coffeyville on Feb. 1 before hosting Highland on Feb. 4.
