Hybrid Cars: Pollution Solution
BY RHONDA ROSS Cowley College will team up with Wichita’s Scholfield Honda for a presentation of hybrid cars on Thursday, March 9, from 6 to 8 p.m. The vehicles will be on-site in Wichita during the “Hybrid Technology” seminar, which will feature the latest information as well as future advances. Sandy Randel, Cowley’s coordinator for career and technical education, said, “We want to bring the technology into our automotive programs at both the main and Mulvane campus. Scholfield Honda is very pro-active in the area of education and instruction of new technology in the hybrid market.” Hybrid cars have engines that combine two or more power sources, usually gasoline and electricity. Because of their low emissions, hybrid cars are being touted by environmentalists as an intermediary solution to the world’s pollution problem. Current hybrids can get as much as 60 miles per gallon on the highway, but future expectations are for hybrids to get as high as 190 mpg. The seminar is free to the public though reservations are recommended. For more information, contact the Mulvane Industrial Technology Center (316) 777-3181 or e-mail Sandy Randel: randel@cowley.edu.
