Golf team takes ultimate mulligan
Issue 2 - 09.08.05

Over the summer, the Athletic Department faced a budget predicament for the first time in 11 years. The most obvious cut came when the golf program was dropped.

This was the second time in the history of the program that it has been dropped. The last time was in 1972, but after a 25-year hiatus the sport had returned to Cowley in 1997.

The Board of Trustees approved the final decision during a summer meeting.

With the end of golf, could a different sport be added when appropriate funding becomes available? While many Cowley alumni, students, and faculty would love to see the return of a football program, the chances seem slim. Saia said that if a new sport is added, it will probably be men and women's soccer.

Bringing in a soccer team would increase the number of student athletes in the dorms. The golf program gave only six scholarships; the new soccer programs would bring about 20 to 25 scholarships per team.

Also, the college already possesses some of the necessities needed to add a soccer program. The Cowley Track and Field Complex located south of the City Ball Park could be a possible home. The field inside the track could be converted into a regulation sized football or soccer playing field. Along with the field, the complex has bleachers to seat 250 people, concession stands, restrooms, and room for equipment storage.

While the college does have some of the pieces needed to build a soccer program, administrators say it will be a couple of years before we possibly see a Cowley soccer team.
