Crooning, dancing, sand art, board breaking, comedy, boxing and a singing dog are just hints of what was in the talent portion of this year’s Mr. Cinderfella competition.

Humanities Division Chair Dejon Ewing began the night with a thanks to everyone involved. She introduced the three judges: Marta Fernandez, Jan MacLaughlin and Ginger Peacock, and the featured emcee, Miss Kansas 2007, Alyssa George.

The opening number had the 15 contestants dancing and lip-syncing to “It’s Raining Men.” [more]

For some, art is something not understood. For others, art is creativity and beauty. For an art student at Cowley, art is life, and the Majors Art Show is living.

The Majors Art Show is an end of the year display of graduating students’ work.

Art has been on display since April 14, but the show ‘opened’ on April 16 with a reception, where the artists were present to answer questions and talk about their pieces. The artwork is on display in the Wright Room of the Brown Center through May 16.

The show is just a way for the graduating art majors to show off all of the hard work that they have done while attending college. [more]

Grab the bathing suits because summer is on its way and SGA celebrated with the End of the Year Bash on May 7.

Complete with beads and masks, Mardi Gras came to campus – in the company of inflatable water slides and non-alcoholic daiquiris. Students showed up between 9 a.m. and midnight for the all-day celebration.

Student Life Director Kristi Shaw said the new SGA members put a lot of time and effort into the bash.

All day long, SGA members passed out Mardi Gras beads and masks. Drinks were available and inflatable water slides were set up in the amphitheater. Besides freebies, there were also games. [more]

May 8, 2008
BY COURTNEY CRAIN
Assistant Editor

The transition from Tigers to Wildcats, Shockers, Cowboys, Cornhuskers or something else is rapidly approaching. The scholarship deadline for this fall has already passed, but graduation has not.

As sophomores look ahead to the future, many cannot help but to look back to the past.

Sophomore Bethany Schmidt is a familiar face around campus. She is involved in Phi Theta Kappa, Act One, student ambassadors, track, cross-country, choir, Nooma Bible Study in Kirk-Dale dormitory, and Campus Christian Fellowship.

Schmidt’s future plans include transferring to Oklahoma State University to pursue a master’s degree in communications with an emphasis in public relations. She said she would like to one day get married, have a family and travel a lot. Schmidt said the aspect of Cowley that stands out the most in her mind is the leadership of the staff and faculty. For the last 11 years, Cowley College has sponsored an annual Duck Dash.

The event, which helps fund Endowment Scholarships, is an invitation-only event for endowment members and Cowley employees. The adoption fee includes a prime rib or grilled chicken picnic. This year’s event is scheduled for May 17 at Spring Hill Farms.

Last year, the duck dash brought in $16,300 for the scholarship program. This year’s goal is to raise $18,000. In the event of inclement weather, the races will be recorded and the event will be held at the college. [more]

May 8, 2008
BY COURTNEY CRAIN

When the lights lift, the scene is a prison cell with the spotlight on a lone teenager.

“So you make your face a mask. A mask that hides your face. A face that hides the pain. A pain that eats your heart. A heart nobody knows.”

“What is this?”

“Why me?”

“Why not you? Everybody’s gotta die sometime. Might as well get it over with.”
He hears the voices of the dead. The audience soon learns that earlier that day, he had taken a rifle to school and killed five of his peers, some he knew and some he did not. [more]
