Courtney Crain: Student of the Year
May 8, 2008
BY ALEX SKOV

Dependable, delightful and wonderful; these are the three words that humanities department secretary Sue Yoachim uses to describe Student of the Year, Courtney Crain. The two have spent plenty of time together this year while Crain fulfilled 12 hours of work-study in the office every week.

“She’s been extremely helpful,” Yoachim said. “She’s a self-starter; we don’t ever have to tell her what to do.”

As Crain continued her work-study, she also saw more of instructor Dejon Ewing, though the two were already acquainted. While she attended Arkansas City Christian Academy, Crain took Ewing’s Interpersonal Communications course, and was a “leader in [the] classroom” according to Ewing.

“She’s just a spectacular young lady. She’s very balanced in her personal life, her educational life and her spiritual life,” Ewing said. “It doesn’t surprise me that she’s successful, because balance is crucial.”

The school year started fast for Crain. She was named the first student of the month in September, and was voted into the top five candidates for Queen Alalah later in the fall. Crain also played a sizeable role in Crazy For You, the fall musical.
That is not where Crain’s honors and activities stop, however. She is president of Tyger Tawk communications club and Vice President of Fellowship in Phi Theta Kappa; and holds memberships in Act One, Campus Christian Fellowship, Journalism Club and Math and Science Club. Through Journalism Club and Tyger Tawk, Crain had the opportunity to travel to Paris, France, in March to attend the International Media Seminar and attend presentations by prominent media members. She is also the assistant editor of the Cowley Press student newspaper and serves as a student ambassador.

“Courtney’s always one of the ambassadors [who’s] willing to pitch in and help out,” Director of Admissions Ben Schears said.

Cowley Press: How does being student of the year compare to the other honors you received this year?

Courtney Crain: Being named Student of the Year is definitely the greatest award I have ever received, not just this year. My time at Cowley has been amazing and this was a wonderful way to finish

.CP: Do you have a favorite memory from your time at Cowley?

CC: Not specifically, but all the times that I have spent just sitting around with friends watching movies and laughing about nothing are the times that really stick out in my mind.

CP: What was your favorite class at Cowley and why?

CC: I can narrow it down to two classes. I loved Interpersonal Communications with Mrs. Ewing because that is a field I’m really interested in. I also really enjoyed Comparative Religion with Mr. Mayer because he required us to work hard and really study the material. I learned a lot in both of those classes.

CP: How have you been able to stay so involved this year?

CC: I would have to give the credit to being on newspaper staff. Being a part of the “media” forces you to stay connected and know what is going on. Sometimes I feel like I haven’t done as good of a job as I could have, but I tried my best.

CP: What has been your motivation?

CC: That would have to be my family and most importantly God. I strive to be the best person I can be to make my family proud of me and to bring glory to my Savior. At the end of the day, knowing that I have done my best to do those things is what makes me happy.

CP: What’s most important about Cowley to you?

CC: Definitely the people I have met. I have made so many new friends and become closer to the ones I already had. I have had wonderful teachers who truly care about their students. I think that’s what I’ll miss the most about Cowley.

CP: How has your time at Cowley affected you?

CC: I have changed so much during my time here. Cowley was a great way for me to transition from high school and having six other people in my graduating class to going to college. It has also given me time to figure out where I want to go and do with my life.

CP: What has been your favorite activity and why?

CC: Definitely being a part of the fall musical Crazy for You. It was hard work and stressful at times, but totally worth it in the end. There were so many people involved in the play and it was really fun get to know people I hadn’t known before.

CP: If you had $1 million, what would you be doing right now?

CC: Well, the obvious answer would be shoe shopping.

CP: Is there a secret about the Humanities department that you’ve learned while work studying there?

CC: Only that it’s the best department on campus! But I guess that was never a secret.

CP: If there is one thing that you learned at Cowley, what is it?

CC: I have learned to never take tomorrow for granted and to live everyday to the fullest. Never be afraid to tell people you love them, because you never know when you won’t have that opportunity anymore.

CP: What do you do when you actually have spare time?

CC: Lately the answer is sleep, but other times I really enjoy going to Wichita for the day with friends or my mom. Cooking and watching movies are also at the top of the list.

CP: What’s been your most embarrassing moment at Cowley?

CC: I don’t know that I have had a most embarrassing moment, but pretty much every time I give a campus tour I end up tripping on my own feet or running into a door. It’s always kind of embarrassing, but I guess I’m just getting used to it. [It’s] nothing too horrifying.

CP: What are your plans after Cowley?

CC: I am transferring to Wichita State University next semester. My major is communications. I have not really decided an emphasis yet, but I have it narrowed down to public relations or marketing. At some point I would like to get married and have a couple kids. Right now I’m just taking it one day at a time.
