| Halloween Dance: police, ninjas, and inflatable sumo wrestlers November 4, 2008 BY NICKOLE VANDERWALL Staff writer This year’s Halloween dance was spook-tacular. The turnout for the Nov. 30 event was “very very good about 375 people,” said Director of Student Life, Kristi Shaw. The costumes well put together, “I think they were pretty good,” she added and “they were very very original.” The DJ played a mix of old and new music that got t he crowd moving. The dance floor was packed for most of the night with a break halfway through for the costume contest. “I was workin’ it all night and I was rockin’ guy’s worlds,” said sophomore Sonja Smart, of the Cowley cheer squad. She wore a sexy Minnie Mouse costume. Some of the baseball boys got into the Halloween spirit for the dance. Sophomore Matt Garcia escaped the guards dressed as a jailhouse prisoner. Sophomore John Maler was a ninja, complete with a sword and nun chucks. Freshman Stephen Spirlock wore an enchanting mermaid costume consisting of a coconut bra, skirt and a wig. Larger than life Sumo wrestlers Luke Zeller and Harrison Mendez sophomores wore inflatable costumes. “I thought it would be something creative and I knew no one else would have something like that.” The costume contest turned out to be a great success, with a large number of students participating. Freshmen Nickole Vanderwall, Erin Drosselmeyer, Jesse Lovelace, Orlando Collina, and Diego Mendez won the “Best in Show” contest with a prize of $25. The girls were dressed up as sexy cops and the guys were Chip n’ Dale cops. Freshman Angela Bennett and sophomore Brice Irving won the “Best Couple” award along with a $30 prize. Bennett was dressed as the “Peace Police” in short pink jumper and Irving was a hippie with bellbottoms and a big `fro. Also, sophomore John Windle won “Funniest Costume” for his naked cowboy and freshman Brandon Smith won “Scariest Costume” with his white face and fake blood. Before the dance there was “Trick-or-Treat in the Dorms” and the “Halloween in the Halls” decorating contest. Sophomores Meghan Wiebe and Erika Riggs won first place with spooky spider webs.
