Open Mic Night is
Full of thrills for you and me
Come out and join us

We can have coffee
And listen to poetry
You should come and join

Talent will be shared
And their stories will be told
Open and listen

Whether inclined toward poetry or prose, tea or coffee, Open Mic Night offers a little something for everyone, including a night full of talented writers eager to share their work. Nov. 4 is the first opportunity this year for students to do so.

Open Mic Night, hosted by the Creative Claws Club, sponsored by Humanities Chair Marlys Cervantes, is a showcase of student talent. An informal evening consisting of bits of poetry and prose with some lyrics put to music; Open Mic is an opportunity for students to display their intellectual wares.

Participating students can perform up to three pieces. The Brown Store graciously hosts the event each semester, offering a variety of drinks for the audience to enjoy.

Before the first Open Mic Night, this area of arts had no real outlet, said Cervantes. This event was then developed to offer students interested in getting their work out to the community a real venue.

“We wanted to have an avenue to showcase that work,” said Cervantes.

After the success of the open mic nights, Creative Claws’ started a talent show last year. It was big. This year students will have the opportunity to share their talents with the whole school. All interested parties should contact Cervantes or Creative Claws President, Krystal Knight and work on getting their act ready by Nov. 18.
Forms can be picked up in the humanities department.

“It’s a fun night of competition,” said Cervantes. “We’ve always had a good response from students, so we’re looking forward to this year.”

Next semester holds two more Open Mic Nights as well as a comedy competition, so anyone interested can begin to ready their pieces and comedy monologues.

The Creative Writing program has taken a recent expansion. Besides having a creative writing class each semester, an additional class is also offered. This semester included the Journal Writing/Storytelling class where next semester will offer a Fiction Writing as well as Poetry Writing class.
