| Swank now on DVD in romantic comedy, P.S. I Love You May 8, 2008 BY MEGAN CUMMINGS Staff Writer There wasn’t a glass slipper, a prince or a dragon. P.S. I Love You is less cliché than most chick flicks; it is not just a sappy love story, and it hit DVD shelves on May 6. Million Dollar Baby star Hilary Swank returns in the more feminine role in P.S. I Love You. Swank plays Holly, a young widow of former Irish musician, Gerry, played by Gerard Butler. The movie opens with an argument between Gerry and Holly concerning her mother, Patricia, played by Kathy Bates. After they fight and make up, the opening credits play. The next scene is Gerry’s funeral held in Patricia’s bar, with Gerry’s choice of vulgar Irish music and, alcohol. After the funeral, Holly shuts out the world to grieve. She watches chick flicks, eats junk food and wears Gerry’s clothes. Then it is Holly’s birthday and the arrival of her immediate family and closest friends. And so begins a yearlong trail of letters leading Holly back to reality and helping her to begin her life without Gerry. Each signed, “P.S. I love you.” With Gerry’s help Holly begins to move on. Holly’s two best friends, Denise, played by Lisa Kudrow, and Sharon, played by Gina Gershon, are instructed in letter number three to accompany Holly on a trip. Upon arriving at the cottage in Ireland Gerry’s instructions continue. While in Ireland, the friends go out to a pub, where Holly meets a gorgeous musician, William, played by Jeffrey Dean Morgan. Next the girls end up stranded out on the water during a fishing trip, and the dashing musician ‘saves’ them. Before returning to the States, Holly visits Gerry’s parents. This is where she receives the fourth letter. The letter reveals how they met and their chemistry from the start. Through her ‘recovery’, Holly builds a friendship with Daniel, played by Harry Connick, Jr. Daniel sits on the sidelines to comfort and support Holly, but through his compassion he develops feelings for her. Don’t think you know where the plot is going just because it seems like this is something you have seen before. There are a few plot twist thrown in here. With an exceptional cast and a sensational story line, P.S. I Love You is hard to dislike. Anyone could easily fall in love with this movie, people should at least rent, if not buy this, must have, DVD. Extras: a collection of interviews with author, Cecelia Ahern, who wrote it when she was 21 years old, and the cast and crew. Ahern discusses how the book came together. . (7:26) Additional scenes include McKay in Celia’s one-woman show. Holly sits in the audience with Gerry (look close, he is in the urn). There are a few bloopers at the end of the scene. (12:34) Play along with “The Name of the Game is Snaps” an instructional video explaining one of the games mentioned in the movie. It involves snapping fingers for vowels as someone to guesses a phrase. (4:48). Finally, a James Blunt “Same Mistake” music video. The Cowley Press is produced by the Newspaper Production students.
