Lady Tigers lose in championship
Finish the season 42-10, 17-1 in conference

Winning 14 of their past 15 games, the No. 5 ranked Lady Tiger softball team headed into the Region VI Championship game with confidence.

They advance to the championship game by defeating Dodge City, Johnson County and Highland to remain the only unbeaten team left in the tournament. But, Jayhawk East rival Johnson County came out of the loser’s bracket to face the Lady Tigers once again.

With the Lady Cavaliers defeating the Lady Tigers 8-5, they forced one final game to see who advances to the NJCAA Division II National Championships. [more]

Tigers clinch 12th Jayhawk East Title in last 14 years

The Tigers are the No. 1 overall seed in the Region VI Tournament, that after starting the year off with a 2-8 record. The Tigers finished the 2008 regular season with a 33-17 (28-8) record on way to their twelfth Jayhawk East Championship in the last 14 years.

The Tigers wrapped up their final two double headers of the season, beginning with the Coffeyville Red Ravens on April 25.

The Tigers were only able to muster four hits and committed two errors compared to Coffeyville’s seven hits and no errors in their 3-1 opening game loss.
In the second game, the Tigers had some better swings as they got 10 hits including a home run by sophomore Tom O’Gorman, his eighth of the season.
The Tigers picked up the 7-2 win as well did sophomore pitcher Chase Roten. Roten picked up his fourth win of the year on the mound compared to his zero losses as he pitched for 5 2/3 innings, giving up just two runs. [more]



Motivar and Poljansek named Student-Athletes of the Year

With close to 300 people attending the 2008 Athletic Awards Banquet on Tuesday, April 22 in the Arkansas City Ag Building, the Tiger athletic programs were recognized for their actions in their sport and in the classroom.

Tiger Booster Club President Mark Patrick and Athletic Director Tom Saia went through the Tiger athletic programs. Afterwards, steak dinners were provided and slide show before the awards ceremony.

During the awards ceremony, the Male and Female Student Athlete’s of the Year were announced.

Sophomore Diego Motivar, member of the Tiger tennis team, won the Male Student Athlete of the Year, while sophomore Kelsey Poljansek, member of the Lady Tiger track and field team, won the Female Student Athlete of the Year.
The student athlete of the year was chosen from the recipients of the 2007-2008 Student Athlete’s of the Month throughout the year. [more]



Track and field capture second straight year Jayhawk East title

With 17 conference champions overall, the Tigers track and field squad captured the Jayhawk East men and women’s conference title for the second year in a row. Dealing with tough wind conditions, the men’s team completed the year winning the cross country, indoor track and outdoor track titles.

The Tiger men finished with 229 points to Neosho’s 132 points to finish in first, while the Lady Tigers finished with 164 points to Coffeyville’s 141 points. The Lady Tigers placed fourth in the region, while the men placed fifth in Coffeyville on May 1-3 .

Led by sophomore Kelsey Poljansek, the Lady Tigers had seven individual champions. Poljansek was conference champion in the shot put, discus and hammer throw. In the hammer throw, Poljansek’s throw of 156’10” broke her own school record. She was the region champion in the discus and hammer.
Sophomore Jennifer Cherono won the 5000 meter run and 3000 meter steeple chase, while helping the 4x800 and 4x400 meter relay teams place first. Cherono was the region champion the steeple chase. [more]
